Aggressive Dog Shot, Killed After Getting Loose, Targeting Family In Virginia, Police Say

A 56-year-old man was forced to shoot a dog that got loose and went after him while he was walking his own pet in Prince William County over the weekend, police say.

Officers were called on Saturday, Oct. 19 to a neighborhood in Manassas when the man and other family members were walking their dogs and were accosted by a pit bull that broke free from a nearby home.

The incident was reported at around 10:45 a.m. in the 10700 block of Balls Ford Road.

According to the Prince William County Police Department, during the encounter, the man fatally shot the fast-charging dog, while a second dog that also escaped returned home without incident.

No additional injuries or property damage was reported.

Animal Control Officers responded to the scene and took possession of the dead dog. Following a consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office, police say that no charges will be filed.
